    Bear Gulch in FSX

My good friend and fellow FS developer Bill Womack has posted new images of his fourth-coming update of Bear Gulch scenery that will accompany the RealAir Simulations Scout FSX package.  The images are courtesy of the talented screen shot "grabber" Nick Churchill.  The images look great, so be sure to have a look!

While checking those out, be sure to take a look at Bill's post introducing Dillingham Field in Hawaii - simply stunning!

    SimHQ celebrating 10 years

SimHQ, a site that covers the entire spectrum of simulation software from air, land, & sea combat, and driving genres, is celebrating ten years of community service starting this week.  One of their contributors, John "Spoons" Sponauer, has written a nice commentary called "Ten years of SimHQ" telling his perspective of those ten years.  He includes a couple of screens showing how the site has changed over time (and he mentions that the site is due for a redesign this year).

On each Monday from now until the end of the year, they will present what they call SimHQ DejaNews.  I'm sure it will bring back many memories of yesteryear in the world of simulation.  This week, they talk about a review done on Jane's F-15, MiG Alley previews, and news related to Rendition and VooDoo2 video cards - boy, those were the days!!  Be sure to check it out before the day is over!

    What's up with the Twinkie?

Those of you who have been following the Twin Comanche project in eager anticipation, I have some updates to relay. As you can see above, work on the Bendix/King KI 825 is underway courtesy of Ed Wilson, one of Eaglesoft's talented gauge gurus.  Yep, that's an actual screen capture of it going in FS.  Ron has been steady on updating me with 2-D panel work, and that too is shaping up very well.  In between work on the Columbia 400 for FSX, I am placing panel lines on the exterior paint of the model.  When I get that finished to a satisfactory level, I'll be handing the textures over to Bob for a bit of tweaking only he can provide.

    Rob Reider's AirShowCast

I'm always excited when I stumble upon a new aviation site. The great thing about my blog is that I get to share that excitement with my fellow aviation enthusiasts. I found AirShowCast this morning, and gave a listen to each of Rob's 6 episodes this year. Talk about great podcasts - Rob's experience as an airshow announcer really gives these episodes a very professional sound.  I highly recommend it!

Forum Field 2007 - multiplayer airshow this weekend

A good friend of mine gave me a head's up on a pretty cool event that is going to be taking place tomorrow in New Zealand. It's the Forum Field 2007 airshow that will be hosted in a multiplayer FSX session!

    From the site:

"To celebrate the first birthday of the New Zealand Flightsim Forum, a special event is happening Saturday April 28th. 'Forum Field 2007' is a virtual Airshow showcasing much of New Zealand's Flightsim talent. Special scenery has been developed by David Hall for the occasion, and a fleet of modern and 'classic' aircraft will be put through their paces throughout the display. The Airshow also features the first public appearance of 'The Awesome 4 Some DC-3 Project' DC-3 model for FSX. Screenshots from the event will be posted on the
    NZFF forums after the show."

Combing the forums, I see that they intend on recording bits of the airshow to publish on YouTube.  Great work Kiwi's!

No FSX SP1 by April 30th

Reported this afternoon by Phil Taylor, Senior Program Manager for Graphics and Terrain:

"It is true, for perf testing the upcoming Beta3, I gave advice to turn AI aircraft down. Some AI aircraft have a high render cost and will skew the results of perf testing Beta3. We had a perf regression in trees we believe Beta3 will fix, and need results that are not skewed to validate that.

"It is also no secret that turning down AI aircraft gives back perf in RTM, this just confirms it. And my guidance simply confirms that SP1 performed no work in this area.

"And yes, this means we won’t make April, sorry about that. We are trying to get it right."

Personally, I appreciate the efforts of those involved getting SP1 completed and done right as Phil states.  I guess they have fallen into the trap of stating an anticipated release date, and it slipping due to complications.  I really hope the public will accept this and be glad for SP1 when it is "right."  Nothing constructive can come from negative statements - just let them do their jobs.

    Thanks for the update, Phil!

    FSX CJ1 released!

I'm pleased to announce the release of the Cessna CJ1 version 1.5 for FSX. Bill Leaming has completely rebuilt the model using the latest FSX techniques featuring specular and bump mapping technology, and he has done a fine job of it!  Head over to Eaglesoft's website for more details.

[EDIT]-Added correction for my poor English ... thanks Jon for pointing that out!

Ouch! Chambliss prop strike in Rio

This was not Kirby's day - first he hits a gate during the race, and then he has this unfortunate incident at the airport.

    GARMIN blog

Did you know that GARMIN had a blog? Until last Thursday, I did not.  While searching for information on Sun-N-Fun, I ran a search through Technorati and this post appeared. I followed it, and saw that built into the post was a contest: name the barnyard animal sound in the intro music to their youtube video.  So, I watched the video, and gave a reply with my answer.

I haven't really thought much of it since then. I figured that there were many others who followed this blog and had beaten me to the punch.  Not so!  I received an email this morning from a PR person from Garmin asking me to forward my shipping details, as I was the very first to reply to the post with a correct answer!  How cool!!  Sometimes it pays to take a chance.

[EDIT] - I got a mention in their
    last post. :)

    FSX SP1 ?

Why is everyone so quiet regarding FSX SP1? Public testing is still underway and code has yet to be fully set in stone, so there are still a lot of question marks as to what will or will not be included in SP1.

I can only say that I very much like what I see. I am chomping at the bit to be able to mention what all I have found to be significantly improved and/or fixed. Until the NDA is lifted, my lips are sealed. But once that agreement has been lifted - watch out!!

    Stay tuned!

    Bonhomme takes poll position

British pilot Paul Bonhomme barely edges current series point leader Peter Besenyei by .31 seconds to take the lead in qualifying, putting him as the last pilot to fly in tomorrow's elimination before the finals.  His time of 1:34:05 at speeds exceeding 220 mph shows that he is a force to be reckoned with.

His success today is not going to his head. Paul comments: “I’m very satisfied, but it was only 10 percent of the whole job. The race is my main focus. To fly consistently is the key to success. I should pass the elimination. The quarter-finals will be a new day for me.”

Steve Jones (+.83) and Mike Mangold (+1.17) placed third and fourth respectively, followed by defending Series Champion, Kirby Chambliss at +1.55 seconds.

The surprise of the day came from rookie
Hannes Arch placing seventh.  He states: “The increase in performance was enormous. I did not expect it. It’s now up to me to use that potential in the elimination. It’s clear to me though that not all the pilots have reached their performance limit.”

The elimination of the second leg of the Red Bull Air Race series begins at 1pm local (GMT -3 hours).

    Polypoke has had a makeover

Microsoft unveiled a brand-new set of features for Live Spaces today.  Details of the new stuff can be found at the Space Craft.  The new code took away my "hack" that allowed me to add custom HTML where I wanted, but I was able to add the "official" HTML sandbox.  We can now remove unwanted gadget titles, so that cleaned up things a bit.  Thanks MS for the new features - I'll be exploring more soon!

How do you like my new title banner?

    Did you know?

I found this fact very interesting:

Back in the mid to late 80's, an IBM compatible computer wasn't considered 100% compatible unless it could run Microsoft's Flight Simulator.

    Unexpected visitor overhead

While I was home this afternoon working in my office, I received a phone call on my cell - I looked to see who it was, and I was delighted to see that it was my good friend Roy Wilbanks. I proceeded to answer it and to my surprise, all that I can hear on the other end is what sounded like a wind storm.

"Roy? ... Roy? ... You there?" I asked.

"Owen! Owen! Are you home?" He finally spoke about 30 seconds into the call.

"Yes, I am home, where are you?" I asked, very puzzled.

"Step outside ... I'm in the J-3 flying up the lake at about 800 feet ... get your camera!" I heard him shout above all of the noise.

    "Okay!" I shouted.

"I can't hear anything you're saying - I'll talk to you later on!" He shouts, and then the phone goes dead.

Christy Lake had spent the day at home with me, so I gathered her in my arms and grabbed my camera as we headed out the door. Sure enough, moments later, here comes Roy meandering up the lake, barely above stall speed. I managed to grab a couple of shots off as he circled overhead, with the one above being the best of 'em all. What a welcome & unexpected airborne visit. Christy Lake sure enjoyed it - the bright yellow of the J-3 made it really easy for her to see. I told her to wave and she just waved and waved, not really knowing why she was doing so.

    Drop by anytime, Roy!
